Viktor Hovland’s season has come to an early end due to injury, but his Ryder Cup spot is safe. He had to pull out from the BMW PGA Championship in September and won’t play again this year.
He only played in the Paris 2024 Olympics and the Scottish Open, leaving him two tournaments short of the four required for DP World Tour membership. But because of his injury, they’ve changed the rules for him.
Hovland’s situation is a bit different from Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton, who are dealing with fines and suspensions. The DP World Tour adjusted Hovland’s requirements so he can keep his membership even though he only played twice.
Ryder Cup Eligibility
A spokesperson said that since Viktor can’t play more events this season due to his injury, they’ve changed his “Counting Tournament” obligation. Fans might think it’s fair since injuries aren’t something players can control.
This news must be a big relief for Hovland, who was probably worried about missing out on the Ryder Cup. Luke Donald had previously mentioned that rules wouldn’t change for Rahm and Hatton, but injuries are seen differently.
Hovland will remain part of next year’s team thanks to this decision. His journey this year was bumpy; he switched coaches early on but went back to Joe Mayo by May after things didn’t work out as planned.
Last year was amazing for him—he won the FedEx Cup and helped Europe win at Rome’s Ryder Cup while climbing to World No.3! But 2024 hasn’t been kind; he missed cuts in three Majors despite finishing third at the PGA Championship behind Xander Schauffele.
Now with an unexpected break forced upon him by injury, Hovland hopes resting up will prepare him well for 2025 when Europe faces off at Bethpage Black during another huge Ryder Cup event! What do you think about all these changes?
