Jeff Winther has had a remarkable display at the DP World Tour Championship with his fine third-round performance, earning compliments from his playing partner Jon Rahm. With an impressive 8-under-par round of 64, he managed to bring himself close to the lead, sitting just two shots off at -14. Winther’s game was on fire, with five birdies on the front nine, followed by two eagles after the turn, including a hole out from the fairway. His solo fourth heading into the final round at Jumeirah Golf Estates was well-deserved.
“Very annoying, everything you did was just a little bit better than me today,” said World No.2 and reigning Masters Rahm to Winther at the end of their game. Winther expressed his gratitude for the kind compliment, saying, “I feel quite happy now.” Winther’s recent performances have been outstanding, leading to a move inside the top 50 in the Race to Dubai. With three top-ten finishes in his last six starts, he is now eyeing his first win since 2021 and the enticing £2.4million first prize in Dubai.
“The last two months have been really good to me. I found something,” Winther added. “Rich [Hanna] and I, my caddie, we have a great relationship and we were making a lot of fuss out of nothing. It’s great, really. We’re just trying to have fun.” Winther’s hard work and positive attitude have paid off, and now he is a strong contender in the championship. Despite Matt Wallace’s scintillating round of 60, featuring nine straight birdies, Winther’s performance was truly exceptional. As the race heats up, Winther is determined to make his mark and secure a victory in the tournament.
