The 2024 PGA Tour Champions season concludes with the Charles Schwab Cup Championship at Phoenix Country Club in Arizona. Players are competing for a share of $3 million, with the winner taking home over $500,000. However, some players have their eyes set on an even bigger prize: finishing at the top of the season-long rankings to win the Charles Schwab Cup.
Only 35 golfers are participating, and out of them, 10 still have a shot at claiming the top spot in these rankings. For six players, winning is entirely up to their performance this week.
Ernie Els leads the pack after a fantastic season where he won three tournaments in just over a month. He triumphed at June’s Principal Charity Classic, followed by victories at the American Family Insurance Championship and Kaulig Companies Championship. A win this week would secure him his first Charles Schwab Cup; however, finishing second, third or fourth could also do it if none of his closest competitors claim victory.
Fans might think it’s anyone’s game as so many players have a chance!
Steven Alker clinched last year’s championship but fell short in the overall race to Steve Stricker. This year, Stricker isn’t playing, leaving Alker another opportunity to seize glory if he wins again or finishes high enough while others falter. Stephen Ames seeks his fourth win this season—if successful, he’ll automatically top the standings regardless of other results.
Chasing Glory: The Contenders
Padraig Harrington is another strong contender who can repeat his past success from 2022 if he maintains his current form after recently winning the Simmons Bank Championship. Y.E. Yang stands fifth thanks to a playoff victory against Bernhard Langer earlier this year—winning now guarantees him first place overall.
Richard Green hasn’t yet tasted victory this year but sits sixth; breaking that streak would ensure him lifting the coveted cup too! K.J. Choi dreams big after capturing his first Senior Open title—he needs specific outcomes from others alongside winning himself.
Ricardo Gonzalez remains hopeful despite needing several stars aligning for him: Els must finish eighth or worse among other conditions! Paul Broadhurst requires similar luck combined with securing his third seasonal triumph here while Jerry Kelly faces an uphill battle relying heavily upon rivals’ placements besides achieving personal success during competition days ahead!
What do you think? Will your favorite player take home the cup?
