Tiger Woods had a moment he’d rather forget during Tuesday’s TGL match, hitting a sand wedge that came up embarrassingly short after a major distance mix-up.
The golf legend thought he was hitting to a target 99 yards away. The actual distance? Try 199 yards.
His teammates Kevin Kisner and Tom Kim couldn’t believe their eyes. “He’s got a wedge,” they said in disbelief. “What are you doing?”
“I heard 99 yards, so I grabbed my 56 and I hit it 100 yards,” Woods explained to ESPN’s Marty Smith, who bluntly asked him “what the hell just happened?”
The 15-time major champion didn’t try to make excuses. “One of the most embarrassing moments in my golfing career just happened,” he admitted. “I just screwed up.”
The blunder came during Jupiter Links’ match against New York, which didn’t go well for Woods and his team. They fell behind 8-0 before teammate Tom Kim finally got them on the board. They ultimately lost 10-3 to the New York team of Cameron Young, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Rickie Fowler.
It’s been a tough stretch for Woods personally. He missed last week’s Genesis Invitational following the passing of his mother Kultida, though he did make an appearance in the CBS broadcast booth on Sunday to help present the trophy to winner Ludvig Aberg.
During his TV appearance, Woods sounded optimistic about golf’s future, particularly regarding ongoing negotiations between the PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia’s PIF.
“Things are going to heal quickly,” he said. “We’re going to get this game going in the right direction. The fans want all of us to play together, all the top players playing together, and we’re going to make that happen.”
Jupiter Links now sits in 5th place in the TGL standings, while The Bay GC leads with a perfect 3-0 record.
Woods hasn’t played on the PGA Tour this year, and his next competitive appearance remains uncertain.
