Tiger Woods is not playing this week because he had his sixth back surgery in September. Instead, he’s hosting the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas and shared that he has a long road ahead before competing with top players again.
During a 30-minute press conference with Dr. Pawan Munjal from Hero MotoCorp, Woods talked about his health, future plans, PGA Tour changes, Ryder Cup pay issues, and more.
Here are some highlights from Tiger’s first media chat in over four months.
‘NOT TOURNAMENT SHARP’
Woods is working out and getting healthier but still isn’t ready to compete at the highest level due to ongoing rehab. He admitted he’s not “tournament sharp” yet and said there’s “a long way to go.” “Still not there,” he mentioned. “These are 20 of the best players in the world and I’m not sharp enough to compete against them.”
He expressed disappointment about not being physically ready to play at this level. Last year, he hoped to play once a month in 2024 but now can’t predict when he’ll be back.

Woods believes players should get as much money as possible from events like the Ryder Cup but only if it’s donated to charity. He recalled similar talks from 1999 where they wanted funds for charity instead of personal payment. “What’s wrong with being able to allocate more funds?” he asked.
If Europeans want to pay for their participation in the Ryder Cup, that’s their choice since it supports their tour financially.
PGA Tour-PIF TALKS
Woods expected quicker deals between PGA Tour and PIF but noted that even with agreements, it would still involve legal reviews . Talks are happening daily, aiming for peace within golf’s landscape. Fans might feel hopeful about these discussions bringing positive changes soon.
“This is an active negotiation,” Woods explained, adding that while things evolve weekly, achieving what’s best for everyone may require breaking some eggs along the way.
ON PRE-SURGERY PAIN
Reflecting on his struggles last season due to unexpected back pain after ankle fusion surgery success earlier on; Woods didn’t foresee needing another procedure until symptoms worsened throughout the year—eventually requiring intervention just so relief could come without spasms or nerve discomfort anymore!
