At the 2023 Solheim Cup, Stacy Lewis’ American team nearly clinched victory but fell just half a point short.
Now, a year later, they seek redemption and need only 4.5 points on Sunday to secure a commanding win at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club.
After Saturday’s sessions ended in a tie, the US leads Europe 10-6 and is poised to win their first Solheim Cup in seven years. “This was a great day for us,” said Lewis.
Lewis expressed her joy to the media after the four balls, stating: “We had such a great day yesterday. It was going to be hard (to replicate it). The Europeans played a lot better today, and that showed, but really, really happy with the day, and to keep the same lead.”
To pull off a win, Europe needs their own ‘Miracle of Medinah’ moment. In 2012, the men’s Ryder Cup team came back from a 10-6 deficit to claim victory. Similarly, in 2015, the US Solheim Cup team also overcame a 10-6 margin with Lewis as part of that historic event.
Sunday Singles Showdown:
Reflecting on the 2015 comeback, Lewis joked about most players not being around then but emphasized their goal: “We’re going to go try to win as many points early as we can (tomorrow) and try to get this thing done.”
The singles matches kick off at 8:50am local time (EST) in Virginia. The opening match features big names Nelly Korda and Charley Hull squaring off. Jennifer Kupcho faces Linn Grant in the final match starting at 10:40am.
Fans might think it’s all set for an exciting finish! With Europe needing eight out of twelve possible points on Sunday, it’s advantage USA heading into what promises to be an electrifying final day.
What do you think? Will Team USA clinch it or will Europe stage an epic comeback?
