Golf’s most prestigious tournament is heading back to its spiritual home, with the Old Course at St Andrews set to host the 155th Open Championship in 2027.

The announcement marks a return to tradition for the legendary Scottish links, which had hosted The Open every five years since 1990 until Covid threw things off schedule.

The pandemic forced organizers to cancel the 2020 event entirely. Rather than just pushing everything back a year, they reshuffled the calendar to ensure St Andrews could host the milestone 150th Open in 2022.

Now things are getting back to normal. The R&A, golf’s governing body, is bringing the championship back to the Home of Golf on its traditional five-year rotation.

The 2027 tournament will run from July 11-18, exactly 100 years after golf legend Bobby Jones won his second straight Open title there with a dominant six-shot victory.

Golf fans still remember the electric atmosphere from the last St Andrews Open in 2022. Australian Cameron Smith put on a show for the record crowd of 290,000, firing a spectacular final-round 64 to overtake Rory McIlroy and claim the famous Claret Jug.

Mark Darbon, the R&A’s new chief executive, couldn’t hide his excitement about the announcement.

“There’s something incredibly special about The Open being played on the Old Course,” he said. “The greatest champions in history have walked these fairways since 1873, and the atmosphere is simply unique.”

The historic venue has a way of creating unforgettable moments. From the ancient stone bridges to the iconic 18th hole running into town, there’s no place quite like St Andrews.

Here’s where The Open is headed over the next few years:
– 2025: Royal Portrush
– 2026: Royal Birkdale
– 2027: St Andrews

“We’re going to make this another milestone occasion at one of sport’s most historic venues,” Darbon promised. With St Andrews, that’s pretty much guaranteed.
