Stacy Lewis thinks last year’s lack of coordination between the Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup was a big mistake.
She believes that not having more collaboration between these events was a missed chance for golf.
This year, the Solheim Cup is back in America and will happen at the same time as the Ryder Cup, giving women golfers more attention.
Lewis shared her thoughts on the pros and cons of sharing the spotlight with men’s events. She said, “I think the biggest con is that we didn’t do more together last year, to be honest. I don’t think we took advantage of two weeks in Europe, two weeks of going to get the Cups,” she said ahead of the start of the 2024 Solheim Cup this week.
Missed Opportunities:
Reflecting on last year, she felt it was a “massive missed opportunity” for both sides. She mentioned that better coordination could have boosted both events and helped golf overall. Fans might agree that it was a lost chance to make golf even bigger.
“It echoes her comments made about the issue last year,” she added, emphasizing how marketing both events together could have been beneficial: “1,000 percent” a missed opportunity.
Lewis also talked about future collaborations between these major tournaments but isn’t sure if it’s possible in alternate years.
Additionally, she’s hopeful about making the Presidents Cup a mixed event one day. “To be honest, I’d love to see the Presidents Cup become mixed. It’s the perfect way to blend the two Tours.” She believes it would quickly improve international teams and create an exciting new format for fans.
The 19th Solheim Cup kicks off this Friday with Lewis leading Team USA against Europe. What do you think? Should they try harder to coordinate these big events?
