Team Europe has won the Solheim Cup three times in a row, but Suzann Pettersen says they are still underdogs this week in Virginia.
She believes playing away from home makes them the underdogs, despite their recent success.
Pettersen is happy to embrace this role and put pressure on Team USA to end their losing streak at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club.
“Playing away always makes you an underdog,” said Pettersen. “We’ve done well in the last three Solheims and aim to keep that momentum going.”
She added, “Being away, I’m glad to leave the pressure on the Americans as home favorites.”
Challenges and Changes:
The Solheim Cup returns quickly after last year’s tie in Spain, aiming to separate its schedule from the Ryder Cup. Pettersen and Stacy Lewis remain captains because it would be tough for someone new to step in with only 11 months’ preparation.
“It’s been a fast year since Spain,” said Pettersen. “Quick celebrations, and now back in the US, it’s different but exciting.”
Fans might think it’s interesting how both teams adapt so quickly.
“The players are ready for the challenge,” she added. “It’s always a big task.”
Stacy Lewis and Suzann Pettersen are leading their teams again after last year’s tie. The quick turnaround means lessons learned can be applied immediately with just two new faces—Esther Henseleit and Albane Valenzuela—joining Europe’s team.
“We drew many great experiences from last year,” said Pettersen. “Being precise and clear goes a long way. Players look for decisive leadership.”
She also mentioned that having new players brings fresh energy into the team dynamics.
