Shane Lowry thinks John Rahm is a beast in the Ryder Cup, but isn’t sure if rules should change for him.
Rahm’s eligibility for the 2025 European Ryder Cup team is under debate due to his switch to LIV Golf. He needs to play four DP World Tour tournaments to keep his membership and can now participate in the Spanish Open after appealing fines and suspensions.
Rahm plans to follow the rules, but there might be issues depending on how his appeal goes. Rory McIlroy has already suggested changing the rules so Rahm can play at Bethpage Black.
Debate Over Rule Changes:
Luke Donald stands firm that no rules will change for anyone. Lowry agrees with this stance but admits it’s tough because Rahm is vital for the team. “Do I want Jon Rahm on the Ryder Cup Team? Yes,” said Lowry. “Should he break the rules? Should there be exceptions? I’m not sure. That’s not my call.”
Lowry wants the best 12 players next year at Bethpage, and if Rahm is one of them, they probably do need him . But he emphasizes he’s not making those decisions; he just wants to be part of it himself. “I’ve seen Rahmbo in two Ryder Cups and he’s unbelievable.”
Fans might think this whole situation is quite complicated.
Lowry aims to make Donald’s team again next year and says it’s one of his main goals for the year. “Bethpage will come around quick,” he noted, recalling his great start last time when he won during the first week of competition.
He practices daily with this goal in mind, seeing it as a driving force in his career right now. Making this tough team would mean a lot to him, and he hopes they can win the trophy together.
What do you think about these rule debates? Should exceptions be made or should everyone follow the same rules?
