Sergio Garcia: Top Choice for 2025 Ryder Cup

Alt text:

Sergio Garcia is back on the European Tour, aiming for another Ryder Cup appearance next year at Bethpage Black.

His return to the DP World Tour shows that tensions in golf are easing, and he plans to compete in events like the Spanish Open and others. The Ryder Cup has always been a stage where Sergio shines, and he’s been performing well lately with a third-place finish in the LIV Golf season after one win and two second-place finishes. He even achieved his best Major result in over seven years by tying for 12th at the US Open.

Fans might wonder if Sergio still has what it takes given some think he’s past his prime. However, despite being outside the top-400 in the OWGR, he’s ranked 22nd in Data Golf’s list and 19th in The Universal Golf Ranking among Europeans. At 45 next year, he remains one of Europe’s finest golfers.

Ryder Cup Dreams:

Sergio hopes to play in a few more Ryder Cups beyond next year. “I feel like my game’s still good enough,” he shared recently. The Ryder Cup format favors match play over stroke play, which suits him well even if his overall season isn’t stellar.

He has teamed up successfully with Jon Rahm before, winning all their matches at Whistling Straits in 2021. Captain Luke Donald might consider pairing them again unless Rahm’s partnership with Tyrrell Hatton changes those plans.

There was some drama with Rory McIlroy during golf’s recent turmoil, but it seems they’ve mended fences. McIlroy once called Sergio his hero growing up, and they had a meaningful conversation at the 2023 US Open that rekindled their friendship.

Whether or not Sergio makes it back to Team Europe depends on how he performs next year and if Captain Donald gives him a wildcard spot. Fans know he’s been controversial but also recognize his legendary status for delivering crucial points for Europe time after time.

What do you think? Will Sergio make it back to Team Europe?
