On Saturday, the LIV Golf Team Championship was full of surprises as Ironheads GC beat Bryson DeChambeau’s Crushers GC to reach the final.
Despite Jon Rahm being out sick, Legion XIII GC also made it to the final alongside 4Aces GC and Ripper GC.
The day had intense matches, but the most thrilling was between Ripper GC and Fireballs GC, especially in the game between Lucas Herbert and David Puig.
Starting on the 16th hole, Puig from Fireballs won both the 16th and 18th holes, gaining a 2-up lead. Over the next eight holes, each player won three holes, keeping Puig ahead with seven holes left.
Puig stayed two up after halving the ninth, tenth, and eleventh holes. With just four holes left, it seemed like Herbert had little chance since his team already lost another match.
However, Herbert fought back fiercely with a par-birdie-par run on the 12th to 14th holes. He took the lead with a par at the last hole for a 1-up victory over Puig.
Unexpected Twists:
The loss hit Puig hard; he was near tears as Sergio Garcia comforted him while Leishman and Chacarra’s top match went into playoff holes. Fans might feel sad for Puig but excited about Herbert’s comeback.
To make things worse for Fireballs GC, Leishman won against his opponent with a par at the first playoff hole. This victory knocked out Fireballs and secured Ripper GC’s spot in Sunday’s final.
