Arnold Palmer’s grandson, Sam Saunders, has retired from professional golf at 37.
After starting his career in 2009 and playing over 150 events on the PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour, Saunders never managed to secure a win. He came close in 2015 at the Puerto Rico Open but lost in a five-man playoff to Alex Cejka. In 2023, he also missed out on a win at the Panama Championship against Pierceson Coody.
This season has been tough for Saunders with nine missed cuts out of his last ten starts . His earnings for the season remained at $29,920, placing him 157th in points. Sharing his decision to retire on Instagram, he expressed gratitude for his journey: “I started this career over 15 years ago, and today was my last professional round.”
Career Highlights:
Saunders had some memorable moments like shooting a 59 on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2019 and qualifying for three US Opens (2011, 2015, 2019). Despite these achievements, injuries have taken their toll over recent years.
Fans might feel sad about this news but hopeful for his future endeavors.
He wrote: “It was never easy for me, and I never reached my playing goals, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.” This sentiment shows how much he valued friendships made along the way.
Reflecting on his journey further: “I am excited for the next chapter of my life,” Saunders mentioned how grateful he is to golf and everyone who supported him. He thanked his wife for being his biggest supporter through thick and thin.
“This may be the end of this chapter but I think the best is yet to come.. Thank you to everyone that has shown me so much kindness and support,” he concluded.
