Rory McIlroy’s Club Head Flies Off at PGA Championship

Rory McIlroy had a surprising moment at the BMW PGA Championship when his club head flew off mid-swing.

His second shot on the par-five 12th hole was beautiful, landing just inside 10 feet from the hole for an eagle putt. But then something unexpected happened—his iron head detached and went flying.

McIlroy’s caddie, Harry Diamond, looked confused as he examined the broken club. Despite this odd incident, McIlroy finished with a five-under 67 in the DP World Tour’s main event.

“I don’t think it’s ever happened to me before,” McIlroy remarked. “It felt weird through impact. I saw the club head instead of the ball and lost track of where it went.”

Unexpected Club Mishap:

The ball ended up close to the pin, so it didn’t affect his shot much. He got the club fixed by hole 16 and didn’t need it for any other holes in between.

Fans might find this news both funny and bewildering.

McIlroy explained that he noticed something odd earlier with his 9-iron but thought nothing of it until the head came off completely. “It was strange not feeling the weight of the club,” he said.

After a powerful drive left him with just 178 yards to go on hole 12, McIlroy’s short iron shot turned into a comedy moment when its head flew off. Laughing, he walked down the fairway to retrieve it.

“I only got all my irons re-glued at East Lake,” he joked with TV commentator Wayne Riley while laughing with spectators about this bizarre event.

Though he missed his eagle putt, McIlroy easily made a birdie with two simple strokes. He handed over his broken club to a referee on hole 13 for repairs allowed during play.

This unusual incident overshadowed another noteworthy moment where he used his putter backhanded on hole eight due to an awkward lie near a water hazard. “Hopefully no more left-handed shots this week,” he added with relief after making par and moving swiftly to tee nine.
