Rory McIlroy’s frustration boiled over at the 17th hole of the BMW Championship when he flung his golf club into the water.
His throw, much like his tee shot, was off target and barely made it to the lake’s edge.
McIlroy had to wade over to retrieve his drenched club, handing it to Harry Diamond to dry off.
Despite this mishap, McIlroy’s round wasn’t a complete disaster. He scored a one-under 71, bringing him to three under par at the halfway mark of the championship. However, tensions were high after a three-putt bogey on the 16th hole and missing the fairway on the par-five 17th.
In reality, it was a half-hearted toss rather than an angry fling. The club bounced and skipped into the water instead of being thrown with force. McIlroy realized what he’d done when he saw only the grip sticking out of the lake.
McIlroy’s Club Toss Incident:
After staring at his submerged club for a moment, McIlroy accepted that he’d have to go fetch it back from its watery grave.

Fans might think this shows how much pressure he’s under lately.
Currently eighth in FedEx Cup standings, with Scottie Scheffler leading by far, McIlroy aims to finish strong this season. His second round left him ten shots behind Adam Scott, who impressed everyone with a second-round score of 63 to reach 13 under at halfway point.
It would take something extraordinary for McIlroy to catch up now. His demeanor on Friday didn’t suggest he felt confident about scoring low anytime soon.
Though he finished fifth in the Olympics recently, a T68 at last week’s FedEx St Jude Championship added another disappointment as he struggles for top form.
To make any headway in Colorado on Saturday, keeping his clubs dry will be crucial!
