Rory McIlroy returned to golf with a bang after his break post-US Open.
He started his Scottish Open title defense with an impressive 65 at the Renaissance Club, hitting an eagle, five birdies, and two bogeys to end five under par. Last year, he narrowly defeated Robert MacIntyre for the trophy and played alongside him and Viktor Hovland in this year’s opening round.
McIlroy admitted it took time to get over missing those crucial putts at Pinehurst No.2 that cost him the US Open title. But now he’s ready for both defending the Scottish Open and next week’s Open Championship at Troon. He overcame a shaky start on the back nine before picking up speed on the front nine .
“I think it was a bit of a slow start,” McIlroy told Sky Sports after his round. “But then I started to feel good and gave myself plenty of chances on our back nine.” He added that overall, it was a good start despite some early struggles.
Thoughts on Overcoming Disappointment:
McIlroy shared how he dealt with his US Open disappointment by spending time in New York alone. Despite receiving advice from current pros, former pros, and TV analysts—even about his caddie Harry Diamond—he chose not to seek any advice during his break.
“I’ve always liked to figure things out myself,” he said. “I’m not really one to reach out for advice… I’ve always wanted to own my success and my disappointments.”
Fans might think it’s cool how Rory likes solving things by himself; it’s like he’s got this lone-wolf vibe going on!
In terms of stats, McIlroy hit eight out of 13 fairways, 13 out of 18 greens in regulation, and averaged 303 yards off the tee—showing that his game is still strong in his first competitive round back.
He’s looking forward to tougher conditions at Renaissance Club as preparation for Royal Troon’s Open Championship next week. “First time I’ve played a links course since Hoylake last year,” he mentioned while discussing getting used to wind conditions again.
Playing alongside familiar faces like Bob (MacIntyre) and Viktor (Hovland), along with supportive crowds made it enjoyable for him: “It was nice… great opportunity to win as well.”
His confidence remains high despite not getting the desired result last time: “My game has been feeling pretty good in practice over the last ten or so days since I picked up the club again.”
