Rory McIlroy thinks winning a gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics would be his biggest achievement since 2014.
He hasn’t won a Major since his second PGA Championship title at Valhalla, and he has had some tough losses, like losing to Bryson DeChambeau by one stroke at the US Open.
Despite winning 17 PGA Tour titles and six DP World Tour trophies, including three Tour Championships and The Players, he still dreams of another Major win.
Olympic Dreams:
McIlroy missed out on a bronze in a seven-man playoff at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Now, as he prepares for his third Olympics since golf returned in 2016, he’s eager to win a medal at Le Golf National.
Representing Ireland, McIlroy said, “It would be the achievement of the year. I haven’t won one of the ‘Big Four’ in ten years. It would probably be one of my biggest career achievements.”
Fans might think this is McIlroy’s best chance to shine on an international stage again.
He’s often asked where an Olympic Medal would rank among his career achievements. He says it’s hard to answer until everything is over. “As golf stays in the Olympics longer,” he added, “it will become more important. Maybe not like the majors but close.”
Meanwhile, Shane Lowry sees the Olympics as a chance for redemption after missing out on another Open Championship win at Royal Troon recently.
Lowry was disappointed with his performance at The Open but quickly saw the Olympics as another opportunity. “After that disappointment,” he said, “I felt like I have a chance to redeem myself soon.”
Lowry remembered how excited everyone was back home when Mona McSharry won bronze in swimming and thought winning gold for Ireland would be amazing.
What do you think? Will Rory or Shane bring home gold?
