Rory McIlroy Defends Caddie Harry Diamond After US Open Loss

Refresh

US Open wasn’t the hardest loss for him. “I’ve had worse losses in my career, like Augusta in ’11 and St Andrews,” he said. “It hurt, but not the worst.”

The putt on 16 is what he regrets most. “It was an easy one I missed,” he shared. “But overall, I played well for most of Sunday.” He often thinks about those last four holes and wishes things were different.

He saw his plaque online with his name spelled wrong initially . It’s fixed now though.

Missed Opportunities and Reflections

After the US Open, he went to New York for a few days. It was planned anyway since he was supposed to play at Travelers but didn’t go eventually. Walking around Manhattan helped him clear his mind and focus on future goals.

Leaving right after the US Open? No regrets there! He felt there wasn’t much to say that would have mattered then.

Fans might think he’s being too hard on himself, but it’s just how athletes are sometimes.

He still remembers a missed putt from 2008 during his rookie year more vividly than recent ones because it was his first big chance gone by.

Being aware of Bryson DeChambeau’s score distracted him a bit during the game. But tough moments teach valuable lessons, which can lead to great achievements later on.

“It was a tough day,” he admitted about Pinehurst No.2, but he’s focusing on positives now as time passes.

Defending Harry Diamond against criticism: “It’s unfair,” he said passionately. Critics never praise when they win together but are quick to blame Harry when things go wrong.

Reflecting on Pinehurst’s final hole: The tricky putt could’ve been firmer if Bryson’s position wasn’t uncertain off the tee; it made him cautious not to overshoot it by ten feet or more!
