Rory McIlroy had a tough day at the US Open, losing his lead on the back nine and finishing behind Bryson DeChambeau.
This marked his fourth runner-up finish in a Major since 2014, but this one hurt the most because he missed a short putt on the 18th that could have forced a playoff. McIlroy’s face showed all his disappointment as DeChambeau smoothly claimed victory, and he left without speaking to reporters.
Despite this heartbreak , McIlroy is still set to play in the Travelers Championship just four days after the US Open. He’s even scheduled to talk to media before it starts.
Upcoming Events:
McIlroy has been enjoying golf recently and said he’s “loving it” after The Masters, even though he didn’t win there either. If he plays at TPC River Highlands, it will be his 17th tournament of 2024. This event might help him move past last week’s loss and aim for another PGA Tour win.
Fans might wonder if Rory can bounce back quickly from such a major letdown.
Interestingly, McIlroy has criticized this tournament before for its low scores due to modern technology making the course feel outdated. Last year, after finishing T7 with an 18-under score, he said: “I don’t particularly like when a tournament is like this.”
In past instances of major disappointments like missing the cut at The Masters in 2023, Rory withdrew from events afterward. But now there’s also buzz about an upcoming PGA Tour policy board meeting regarding a deal with Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) behind LIV Golf.
Even though he’s not on the policy board anymore, McIlroy remains influential and attended key meetings remotely during previous tournaments.
So while there’s still time for him to pull out of this week’s event if needed, we’ll soon see how well he handles his latest setback.
What do you think? Should Rory take some time off or keep playing?
