Rory McIlroy finally did it. After an 11-year wait that felt like forever to golf fans, he slipped on the Green Jacket at Augusta National, completing his career Grand Slam in spectacular fashion with a playoff victory over Justin Rose.
The golf world erupted in celebration. Tiger Woods was one of the first to congratulate him, followed by legends like Sir Nick Faldo, Phil Mickelson, and Gary Player.
But here’s something pretty amazing – the Royal Mail decided to do something special to mark the moment.
For three days, every single piece of mail in the UK carried a special message: “Congratulations, Rory McIlroy, on completing your career Grand Slam!”
That’s millions of letters and packages celebrating one of golf’s rarest achievements. Only six players have ever managed to win all four majors in their career.
“This is incredible,” wrote Gabby Herzig of The Athletic on social media, sharing a picture of the unique postmark that was stamped across the UK from April 15-17.
Golf fans loved it. Some called it a “class act” by the Royal Mail, while others started wondering if McIlroy might follow in Faldo’s footsteps and receive a knighthood someday.
The last player to complete the career Grand Slam was Tiger Woods back in 2000 when he won The Open. Now McIlroy joins an exclusive club that includes some of golf’s greatest names:
* Gene Sarazen
* Ben Hogan
* Jack Nicklaus
* Gary Player
* Tiger Woods
There’s actually one golfer who did even better – Bobby Jones won all the majors in the same year in 1930. Now that’s something.
McIlroy’s next challenge? The PGA Championship starts May 15. With the pressure of the Masters finally off his shoulders, who knows what he might achieve next.
