Rocco Mediate thinks the playoff format in golf Majors should change to an 18-hole showdown, just like his famous clash with Tiger Woods in 2008.
Back then, Rocco had a thrilling battle with Woods at the US Open, where they played an extra round before Tiger finally won. Rocco has won six times on the PGA Tour and five more on the Champions Tour, but that duel is what people remember most about him.
At the Charles Schwab Cup Championship, Rocco was asked about his memories of playing against Woods. He said it was one of his best experiences ever. “Oh, gosh yeah. It is,” he shared. “The most memorable win was the Fry’s two years after.”
Fans might think it’s interesting how much Rocco treasures these moments despite not winning that day. He explained that losing isn’t so bad when you give it your all and have fun trying. “It was awful fun trying,” he said.
Playoff Format Debate:
In 2008, even after a full extra round, Rocco and Woods were still tied until sudden death decided it all on Monday. But since 2018, playoffs have been shortened to just two holes followed by sudden death if needed. Rocco finds this change “ridiculous” and insists Majors deserve longer playoffs: “Every major should be an 18-hole playoff.”
When questioned if he meant it seriously, he confirmed with no hesitation: “100 percent serious.” He doesn’t care about TV schedules; for him, it’s all about earning that trophy.
Each Major has its own way of breaking ties now—like sudden death at Augusta or a few extra holes at others—but Rocco’s heart remains with those marathon showdowns from before.
What do you think? Should golf bring back longer playoffs for big tournaments?
