Robert Rock’s Career: US Open Comeback & Beating Tiger Woods

Robert Rock made a surprising comeback to professional golf by qualifying for the US Open, even after retiring 18 months ago.

He shared his thoughts in an interview about his unexpected return, reminiscing about his career and memorable moments like beating Tiger Woods. Despite not making the cut at the US Open, Rock found joy in just being part of such a prestigious event.

“It was a brilliant experience,” he said. “I hadn’t planned on playing this year. I retired in 2022, hoping to still play occasionally, but that didn’t happen. So, I tried qualifying just to see where my game stood among top players.”

Rock expressed surprise at enjoying Pinehurst No.2 since he wasn’t fond of American tournaments before. He mentioned how vast and challenging the place is, yet it’s hard not to appreciate it once you’re there.

Reflecting on Retirement and Family

In 2022, Rock decided to retire from professional golf to spend more time with his son, who is passionate about football. It wasn’t due to his skills fading but rather a matter of timing in life.

Fans might find it inspiring that he chose family over fame.

His most cherished victory was at the 2012 Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship when he beat Rory McIlroy by one stroke while playing alongside Woods in the final round.

“I played one of my best rounds before facing Tiger,” Rock recalled. “On Sunday, I wanted not just to watch him but also hope he’d think I did alright.”

Looking back at his long career spanning 465 events over 25 years, Rock felt that winning against top players in Abu Dhabi was his proudest moment. “If you take that day away,” he reflected, “I’d be disappointed with my career.”
