A house known as the “best house in golf” is up for sale at Royal Troon Golf Club.
Just steps away from the second and 16th greens, this estate called ‘Blackrock’ features two private homes. Named after the black rocks between Royal Troon and the sea, it’s a prime spot for golf lovers.
Visitors to The Open this week might have seen a big “FOR SALE” sign in front of one of these houses.
Real estate company Strutt & Parker only learned about the sale last Monday and quickly listed it just in time for this week’s Major event. There’s no public listing or price yet, but owning such a historic property won’t be cheap.
Historic Value:
This property existed even before Royal Troon Golf Club was established in 1878. The original plans included ‘Blackrock Cottages’ when designing the initial six-hole course. Built in the 1920s, located at 16 Crosbie Road, it’s a renovated four-bedroom, four-bathroom home that Golf Digest dubbed “the best house in golf”.
When it was last sold in 2007, it had an asking price of £850,000. According to Scottish newspaper Daily Record’s joke back then, any buyer would need £3 million—“One million for the house and two million to get the windows repaired every couple of days,” wrote Tam Cowan.
A nearby four-bedroom property sold for £935,515 last year according to Rightmove.
Fans might think this is an incredible opportunity to own a piece of golfing history!
The other part of Blackrock belongs to Paul and Catherine Gregory from Edinburgh who bought it as a summer home 17 years ago. Before The Open Championship at Royal Troon in 2016, Paul mentioned he had never been approached by Royal Troon about buying their part of Blackrock.
What do you think? Would you want to live next to such an iconic golf course?
