Presidents Cup: Internationals’ Turnaround Stats

The Internationals made a huge comeback in the Presidents Cup on Friday.

They turned things around after a rough start, where they lost 5-0 to the Americans on Thursday. The stats from Data Golf show that their amazing putting skills helped them tie the score at 5-5.

On Thursday, the Internationals were eight strokes worse in putting compared to Team USA. But on Friday, they improved dramatically, gaining 16 strokes over their rivals. It was a tough day for the Americans as every player struggled with their putts , while only one International player had negative putting stats.

Hideki Matsuyama and Sungjae Im set a record with their 7-and-6 victory over Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele. Matsuyama led the team with +2.03 strokes gained in putting. Overall, the Internationals outperformed in three of five key areas: around the green (+2.69) and tee to green (+1.68).

Fans might think this comeback shows how unpredictable sports can be.

Even though Team USA had a massive lead of 26 strokes on day one, Weir’s team still managed an impressive 19.46-stroke advantage on Friday.

Corey Conners was the standout player on Friday, gaining 4.42 strokes overall. On day one, Patrick Cantlay was the top American with +3.93 strokes gained total.

Brian Harman had a rough day on Friday, losing 3.87 strokes overall. Only three Internationals had negative stats: Christiaan Bezuidenhout (-1.06), Jason Day (-1.74), and Byeong Hun An (-2.94).

Time will tell if this momentum carries into Saturday’s double session as morning four balls begin.
