The US clinched the 2024 Presidents Cup for the tenth time in a row, defeating Mike Weir’s International team 18.5-11.5.
Despite the final score, the home team had some bright moments, notably sweeping the Friday foursomes 5-0.
After Sunday singles wrapped up, three US players tied at the top with four points each.
Xander Schauffele was one of them. He started strong on Thursday, teaming with Tony Finau to beat Byeong Hun An and Jason Day. However, he stumbled on Friday when he and Patrick Cantlay lost badly to Hideki Matsuyama and Sungjae Im. But Schauffele bounced back Saturday by winning both his matches—first with Finau against Corey Conners and Mackenzie Hughes and then with Cantlay against Si Woo Kim and Tom Kim. On Sunday, he defeated Day 4&3 .
Fans might think this victory shows how dominant Team USA is right now.
Collin Morikawa also scored four points. He began with a narrow win alongside Sahith Theegala over Min Woo Lee and Adam Scott but faced a setback on Friday against Scott and Taylor Pendrith. Morikawa then partnered with World No.1 Scottie Scheffler to win on Saturday morning before teaming up with Sam Burns for another victory in the afternoon session. He capped off his performance by beating Adam Scott 2&1 on Sunday.
Patrick Cantlay matched their four-point haul too. His journey started well as he and Burns beat Matsuyama and Conners but hit a rough patch losing alongside Schauffele on Friday. The duo of Cantlay and Burns reunited successfully on Saturday morning, followed by an afternoon win for Cantlay playing again with Schauffele against Si Woo Kim and Tom Kim. Finally, Cantlay triumphed over local favorite Pendrith 3&1 in Sunday’s singles.
2024 Presidents Cup Individual Points:
Sam Burns was another standout for Team USA, earning 3.5 points without losing a match—a feat no other American player achieved this year! Scheffler and Russell Henley also contributed significantly by securing three points each.
For the Internationals, scoring was much tougher; six players managed two points each—Scott, Conners, Matsuyama, Pendrith, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, and Si Woo Kim—with Scott becoming the all-time leading scorer for his team after his Friday win alongside Pendrith against Morikawa/Theegala pairing.
Interestingly enough (or perhaps not), Brian Harman failed to score any points despite participating in three sessions —his last chance evaporated when Bezuidenhout bested him in Sunday’s singles match-up (2&1).
