PNC Championship: 5 Dream Teams for Future Tournaments

The PNC Championship isn’t your typical golf tournament – it’s where the sport’s biggest stars team up with their family members for a unique 36-hole showdown.

Only 20 players get invited, and they’ve got to be Major champions or Players Championship winners. But here’s the catch – their amateur partners can’t be pro golfers themselves.

We’ve seen some amazing family duos over the years. Tiger Woods playing with his son Charlie has become must-see TV, while John Daly and “Little John” always draw crowds.

The tournament’s come a long way from its “Father-Son Challenge” days. Now wives and grandkids can join in too.

But what dream teams would really get golf fans excited? Here are some family pairings we’d love to see:

Rory & Gerry McIlroy would be incredible to watch. Gerry’s been there through all of Rory’s big moments, and he’s no slouch himself – he plays at the super-exclusive Seminole Golf Club and has been scratch. They’ve already shown they can play well together at the Dunhill Links Championship.

Matt Fitzpatrick teaming up with his mom Sue would be something special. She’s already proved she can hang with the pros – they won the team event together at the 2023 Dunhill Links Championship. Like mother, like son!

How about Phil Mickelson and his 89-year-old dad? Sure, Phil’s LIV Golf status might complicate things, but watching “Lefty” get called “junior” would be worth it alone. Plus, Senior still shoots his age regularly – pretty impressive!

Here’s an interesting one: Dustin Johnson and Wayne Gretzky. DJ’s father-in-law isn’t just “The Great One” on ice – he recently won a celebrity edition of The Match, beating Olympic legend Michael Phelps.

Jon Rahm could bring either parent – his dad Edorta (a 9-handicapper) or mom Angela (plays off 26). The whole family got into golf after watching the ’97 Ryder Cup at Valderrama. Talk about a family affair!

These pairings would add some fresh excitement to an already amazing event. Who wouldn’t want to see these family dynamics play out on the course?
