A rising French star is catching everyone’s attention as a potential game-changer for Europe’s Ryder Cup team this September.
Three-time Ryder Cup veteran Paul McGinley can’t stop talking about Matthieu Pavon, who’s been turning heads with his recent performances. The Frenchman just went undefeated at the Team Cup, winning all three matches alongside his countryman Romain Langasque.
"He’s been something special," McGinley says, clearly impressed. "He’s got a bit of grit about him."
That’s exactly what Europe needs right now. They’re looking at bringing in two or three rookies for this year’s away contest at Bethpage Black – and it won’t be an easy ride.
McGinley, who’s now working as a Strategic Adviser to European captain Luke Donald, knows what it takes to succeed on American soil. "We’re looking for personality, guile and grit," he explains. "Someone who can play in a hostile environment."
Pavon’s already proven he can handle the pressure in America. He grabbed his first PGA Tour win at the Farmers Insurance Open this January, shooting up to World No. 20.
His rise has been pretty remarkable. After winning his first DP World Tour event at the 2023 Spanish Open, he was the last player to earn his PGA Tour card through the European rankings. Now he’s playing in all the majors and big-money events this season.
But Pavon’s not the only rookie catching McGinley’s eye.
"Aaron Rai brings similar qualities," McGinley notes. "And don’t forget Matt Wallace – another player with that grit we’re looking for."
The former European captain also highlighted some fresh faces from this week’s Team Cup. "Matthew Jordan has been brilliant. Romain Langasque too. But they’ll need incredible seasons to catch up to where Pavon and Wallace are right now."
There’s still plenty of golf to be played before the final 12-man teams are decided. But one thing’s clear – Europe’s looking for fighters who won’t back down from the intense atmosphere of an away Ryder Cup.
And right now, Matthieu Pavon’s leading that rookie charge.
