Patrick Reed is set to play in the DP World Tour’s Open de Espana later this month.
He got an invite for the event happening from September 26-29, where legends like Seve Ballesteros and Arnold Palmer have won before. This tournament follows closely after the LIV Golf Team Championship in Dallas and two weeks after the Individual Championship in Chicago. Reed’s team, 4Aces, is out of the running for the team title, and he’s currently 20th in individual standings.
Reed will face off against other LIV Golf League players at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, including Tyrrell Hatton and Jon Rahm. These players have appealed against penalties from the DP World Tour for playing in overlapping events while still members . Initially, Rahm was barred from his home event due to a suspension but managed to overturn that decision just before the deadline.
Rahm’s Ryder Cup Chances
Rahm’s participation keeps his Ryder Cup hopes alive since he needs to compete in four DP World Tour events each season (excluding Majors) to stay eligible for Luke Donald’s team. Fans might think this rule adds extra pressure on players. Besides Open de Espana, Rahm plans to play in Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and Andalucia Masters soon.
Both Reed and Rahm will be joined by Spanish LIV golfers Eugenio Chacarra and David Puig via National Spots category. At this moment, Sergio Garcia is the only Spanish player in LIV Golf without a slot for Open de Espana; he might need a special invitation like Reed got if he wants to join.
Jose Luis Ballester also confirmed his spot; he made history by winning the 2024 US Amateur as the first Spaniard ever.
