Jack Nicklaus has announced the Memorial Tournament will return to its usual date in 2025.
Since 1976, the tournament has mostly been held right after Memorial Day in late May. However, for 2024, it was moved to later in the year due to the PGA Tour’s new Signature Event model. The Canadian Open took its place during that time.
Nicklaus agreed to this change as a favor but had discussions with Jay Monahan about bringing it back to its original slot next year.
Before Scottie Scheffler won the 49th event, Nicklaus expressed his preference for the traditional date. He mentioned he would rarely play a week before a major championship and felt uneasy hosting an event he wouldn’t typically participate in himself.
Event Rescheduling:
In a statement on Monday, Nicklaus confirmed that from 2025 onwards, the Memorial Tournament will be held during Memorial Day week again. This decision is seen as beneficial for everyone involved—players, fans, and organizers alike. Barbara Nicklaus will be honored at the 50th event.
“The relationship between our tournament and the PGA Tour is like a partnership,” said Nicklaus. “We agreed to move our date for one year when they introduced their new business model.”
Fans might think it’s great news since many prefer tradition over changes.
Rory McIlroy also shared his thoughts during this year’s tournament: “I love playing before majors; it helps me prepare.” He acknowledged Jack’s different approach but believed either way would attract top players.
Scottie Scheffler echoed similar sentiments: “I’ll play regardless of when it’s scheduled.” Although he admitted having a break before major events could be advantageous, he’d still show up no matter what.
Despite finishing T41 at the US Open after playing at Muirfield Golf Village just prior, Scheffler reflected on how varying schedules affect preparation differently based on course conditions and personal routines.
