The spotlight was on Bryson DeChambeau winning his second US Open and Rory McIlroy’s surprising late stumble, but Matthieu Pavon quietly secured his best Major finish with a fifth-place result.
Despite a tough front nine in the final round, Pavon stayed calm and finished strong at Pinehurst No.2, while big names battled it out nearby. In the same group as DeChambeau, who feared losing when McIlroy gained momentum early on, Pavon held steady.
McIlroy’s hopes faded with three late bogeys from missed short putts . As the final group wrapped up brilliantly, McIlroy hurried off after another Major disappointment.
Pressure and Composure:
Pavon reflected on McIlroy’s struggle: “At the end of the day we are all human. Rory has been chasing another major for many years.” Fans might think that maybe this time pressure got to him again.
Meanwhile, DeChambeau showed incredible mental strength. Needing a par to win, he recovered from a bad drive with an amazing bunker shot to secure victory. He called it “the best shot of my life,” while Pavon praised it as “one of the best shots in golf history.”
Pavon admired DeChambeau’s short game under pressure: “It’s not just about hitting far; his short game is masterful.”
Pavon’s Journey:
For Pavon, born in Toulouse, France, recent months have been fantastic despite some missed cuts. His confidence soared after finishing fifth at Pinehurst No.2 and winning at Torrey Pines in January.
He shared how he kept things simple during tough times: “We know that in a season you’re going to have ups and downs… I always tried to keep things simple.” Feeling tired recently but rejuvenated now, he believes one good week can make you feel invincible.
Playing alongside Bryson was an unforgettable experience for him: “It was awesome being last off with Bryson… The crowd was nice… It was nice to feel that sort of energy.” Dropping birdies on his back nine made finishing fifth even sweeter.
