Matt Kuchar’s 17-year streak in the FedEx Cup playoffs has ended.
He needed a win at Sedgefield Country Club to keep his record but fell short in the Wyndham Championship. This event was heavily affected by weather, making it even tougher for him.
Kuchar led after two rounds with scores of 64 but struggled on the final day, finishing one-over and 11-under for the tournament.
Weather Challenges and Final Rounds:
On Sunday, he played 36 holes due to delays and finished his third round with a score of 70. He then completed 17 holes of his final round before stopping due to poor light.
Unable to catch Aaron Rai, who won with -18, Kuchar decided to mark his ball on the 18th hole and return Monday morning when conditions were better. Fans might find this decision quite surprising.
His partners finished in fading light while CBS announcer Jim Nantz commented: “The tournament is over, but it’s not. It’s so strange.”
Kuchar later explained: “I was trying to set an example for Max [Greyserman]. We were so far past when we should’ve stopped play.”
Greyserman had been leading by four strokes but a quadruple bogey brought him back into contention with Rai. Rai secured victory with a birdie while Greyserman could only manage par.
Kuchar will now take some time off before likely returning for the FedEx Cup Fall series later this year.
