Mark Darbon is the new CEO of The R&A and secretary of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews.
He will take over from Martin Slumbers in November, who announced his departure earlier this year.
Darbon is leaving his role as CEO of Northampton Saints, a Premiership Rugby club, to join The R&A.
New Leadership at The R&A
Excited about his new position, Darbon said: “I am thrilled and honoured to be taking up these positions with The R&A and The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews and to be moving into golf, a sport I have always loved.” He also mentioned how he looks forward to working with talented staff and partners to achieve more success.
Fans might think this change could bring fresh ideas to the organization.
Darbon’s responsibilities will include overseeing major tournaments like The Open and the AIG Women’s Open. His first major championship as CEO will be at Royal Portrush in 2025. Additionally, he will serve as secretary for the 270-year-old club that boasts over 2,400 members worldwide.
Niall Farquharson, chairman of The R&A, praised Darbon’s extensive experience in global sports management. “We were greatly impressed with Mark’s knowledge and experience,” he said. “We believe he will be an excellent leader for The R&A.”
