Ludvig Aberg just pulled off something pretty amazing at the Genesis Invitational – a perfect hole-in-one that sent the crowd wild at Torrey Pines.
The 24-year-old Swedish star nailed his first-ever PGA Tour ace on the 140-yard par-3 third hole during Saturday’s round. Using a pitching wedge, he landed the ball just past the hole before it spun back and disappeared into the cup.
It couldn’t have come at a better time. Aberg started the day tied for fifth place, and the ace moved him to six-under for the tournament.
The shot was even more special because it’s helping a good cause. Every hole-in-one at this event triggers a $10,000 donation to California Rises, a foundation helping recovery efforts from recent wildfires.
This is actually Aberg’s comeback tournament. He’d been dealing with a mysterious illness that forced him to drop out of the Pebble Beach Pro-Am earlier this month – an illness that made him lose eight pounds.
“I love this place,” Aberg said about Torrey Pines after his second round. “It’s one of the best golf courses we play.”
That’s quite a turnaround from his last visit here in January, when he started strong with a 63 but ended up finishing tied for 42nd as that illness started taking hold.
The World No. 6 is looking for his second PGA Tour win, following his victory at the 2023 RSM Classic.
Seems like hole-in-ones are becoming a trend lately. Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry both made aces at Pebble Beach, Emiliano Grillo nailed one at the Phoenix Open’s Stadium Hole, and Patrick Reed got one at LIV Golf Adelaide.
Fun fact: The last person to make a hole-in-one on this particular hole at Torrey Pines was Richy Werenski, back in 2021 during the Farmers Insurance Open.
