Longest Playoff in DP World Tour History

In golf, sometimes it takes more than the usual 72 holes to find a champion. There have been many unforgettable playoffs in the sport’s history, with some events stretching far beyond the norm. The DP World Tour has seen its fair share of these marathon battles.

On the Japan Golf Tour, there was once a playoff that lasted 14 holes! Meanwhile, back in 1949 on the PGA Tour, an 11-hole playoff took place. As for the DP World Tour, nine holes is the record for longest playoff, and it’s happened three times!

In 1989 at the Dutch Open, Jose Maria Olazabal managed to win despite a double bogey on the ninth extra hole against Ronan Rafferty and Roger Chapman. This victory marked his sixth title on this tour.

Epic Playoffs in Golf History:

Fast forward to 2013 at the Spanish Open, Raphael Jacquelin clinched his fourth DP World Tour title after beating Maximilian Kiefer on that same ninth playoff hole. Felipe Aguilar was knocked out earlier at just three extra holes.

Fans might think these long playoffs are thrilling yet nerve-wracking!

More recently, in 2024 during the Andalucia Masters, Julien Guerrier and Jorge Campillo faced off in another nine-hole showdown. They parred eight holes before Guerrier finally won by parring again on the ninth hole against local favorite Campillo.

These epic matches show how unpredictable and exciting golf can be! What do you think about such intense games?
