Lexi Thompson is retiring from full-time professional golf at the end of this season.
She will play her final tournament at the Grant Thornton Invitational, a mixed event with LPGA and PGA Tour players, held in Florida from December 13-15.
Thompson will once again team up with Rickie Fowler for the second year in a row.
Last year, they finished T6, just four shots behind Lydia Ko and Jason Day. During that event, Thompson made history by hitting an ace on the par 3 16th hole . She hopes to finish her career with another memorable moment in 2024.
Upcoming Tournament:
Not only are Thompson and Fowler returning, but so are last year’s winners Ko and Day. Nelly Korda and Tony Finau, who finished T4 last time, will also compete again.
After announcing her retirement plans, Thompson said she felt “very content” with her decision. Fellow golfers like Allisen Corpuz praised her contributions to the sport. USGA CEO Mike Whan called her “courageous.”
Fans might think it’s bittersweet to see such a talented player step away from full-time competition.
Recently, Thompson has shown great form despite missing some cuts earlier in the season. She placed T2 at the Meijer LPGA Classic and T9 at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. Reflecting on her future after leading in a major tournament’s first round at Sahalee Country Club, she said: “I’m just taking it one day at a time… Golf is a crazy game.”
While she leaves open the possibility of returning someday, for now, this upcoming tournament seems like it will be her grand finale.
