Curtis Thompson, brother of LPGA Tour sensation Lexi Thompson, has earned his spot at the RSM Classic after an intense round of Monday Qualifying that went under the lights. The 30-year-old golfer shot a four-under-par 66 to advance to an eight-for-three playoff and managed to secure his place in the field by making a birdie at the fifth playoff hole. This hard-earned spot puts him in the company of Jacob Solomon, Rafael Campos, and Matt Atkins, who also qualified at the event at Brunswick (Georgia) Country Club.
Thompson had previously held a PGA Tour card during the 2022 season but was unable to maintain his status after missing 16 of 27 cuts. Despite this setback, he has continued to compete, participating in the Korn Ferry Tour this season and preparing to take part in the second stage of PGA TOUR Q-School after finishing 155th on the points list for the season.
Having already competed in one PGA Tour event this season, Thompson is excited to have qualified for his second event of the year. He humorously commented, “Mountain Dew and some chicken wings will be my way of celebrating.” The RSM Classic is the concluding event of the PGA Tour fall series, offering players the chance to secure their cards and earn spots in signature events for the upcoming 2024 season.
In an exciting turn, Curtis’s sister, Lexi Thompson, was given a sponsor invite to the Shriners Open in October. The 11-time LPGA Tour winner, ranked 28th in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings, represented a historic moment as she aimed to become the first woman to make a cut at a PGA Tour event since 1945. Despite a valiant effort during her second round, Lexi narrowly missed the cut and reflected on her performance with pride, stating, “[I’m] very proud; I played really well today, came out super early, and bogeyed 17 but made a great save on 18 there and just overall played very steady.”
