Lexi Thompson won’t be playing in the 2024 Evian Championship.
She hasn’t competed there since 2019 when she missed the cut for the second year in a row and shared her frustration on Instagram.
The 2014 Chevron Championship winner posted: “To play well today hit one bad golf shot but hit 3 iron shots right at the pin 5 ft at one point then end up 40+ ft….umm really? I’m actually very thankful that I don’t have to put myself thru that for another two days. You’re a beautiful place Evian but that’s just too many bad breaks with good shots for me, so bye @evianchamp ! #justnotforme #allgood #onward.”
That post was quickly deleted and replaced with an explanation: “My words were only directed at my frustration of not playing well in a major and at the unfortunate bounces we all get while playing this crazy game of golf. I didn’t mean it in a mean way at all. Obviously just hasn’t been the course for me the last few years, but some girls are playing great, and I wish them the best of luck this weekend.”
Thompson’s Recent Form:
After no championship due to Covid-19 in 2020, Thompson has stayed away from Evian Resort. Her early appearances were strong with third place, T10, and runner-up finishes after it became a Major in 2013. But later results dipped to T22 and T48 by 2017.
Fans might find her absence surprising given her recent form improvement since announcing retirement plans.
The World No.33 is among seven top-50 players skipping Evian-les-Bains this year. Notably absent is World No.4 Ruoning Yin. Meanwhile, Nelly Korda returns after recovering from a dog bite incident outside a Seattle coffee shop which kept her out of Aramco Team Series London.
Charley Hull also plans to compete next week despite withdrawing early from Aramco Team Series London due to shoulder issues and illness.
Thompson’s decision comes amid an upswing since declaring she’d retire from full-time professional golf by season’s end.
In early months of 2024, she missed four cuts in seven starts before revealing plans to leave the sport later this year.
Since then, she finished T2 at Meijer LPGA Classic, T9 at KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, and T8 alongside Brooke Henderson at Dow Championship team event.
Even before these results like Sahalee’s T9 or Henderson partnership’s T8 finishings—fans wondered if winning another Major might change her mind about retiring?
Thompson said she’s “content” with retiring yet continues working hard each event regardless.
After round one of KPMG Women’s PGA Championship: “I figured I would be getting that question… I’m very content with [my announcement]. Golf is crazy; taking it day-by-day.”
By week’s end: “Just building on [current progress]. Few weeks off post-Dow Championship—to keep improving.”
