Lexi Thompson is gearing up for what might be her last Major at the AIG Women’s Open.
She shared in May that she plans to step away from a “full professional golf schedule” after 17 years since her debut as a 12-year-old at the US Women’s Open.
The 29-year-old expressed: “While it is never easy to say goodbye, it is indeed time. At the end of 2024, I will be stepping away from a full professional golf schedule.”
“I’m excited to enjoy the remainder of the year as there are still goals I want to accomplish. I’m looking forward to the next chapter of my life. Time with family, friends, and my trusted companion, Leo,” she added.
After missing the cut at the US Women’s Open shortly after her announcement, Thompson bounced back with strong performances. She achieved a T2nd finish at the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give and two more top-10 finishes, including leading after Thursday’s round at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.
Fans might feel mixed emotions about this news—both sadness for her departure and excitement for her future endeavors.
Thompson remains content with her decision despite recent successes. Speaking at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, she said: “I’m just taking it one day at a time. I made my announcement. I’m very content with it.”
She doesn’t attribute her improved form in 2024 to her retirement plans but rather to feeling comfortable on the course and playing freely.
Now, she has another chance to improve on her best finish of eighth at a Women’s Open and possibly secure a second Major victory before retiring.
Lexi Thompson AIG Women’s Open Results
In past Women’s Opens, Thompson’s best result was T8 in 2016 at Woburn. She’s missed four cuts out of eleven appearances but finished between 11th and 20th five times. She withdrew from the 2018 championship but has played every other year since debuting in 2012.
Lexi Thompson’s Best Major Results
Throughout her career, Thompson has played in 66 Majors, winning one—the 2014 Kraft Nabisco Championship (now Chevron Championship). Despite only one win, she’s had several top finishes across all major tournaments:
– Five top-10s at US Women’s Open
– Four top-10s at Women’s PGA Championship
– Three top-10s at Evian Championship
A notable incident occurred during the 2017 ANA Inspiration where she was penalized four strokes due to an incorrect ball placement spotted by a TV viewer; this cost her the title in a playoff against So-yeon Ryu.
Thompson has also been runner-up three times: solo second at Evian Championship (2015), T2nd at US Women’s Open (2019), and T2nd again at KPMG Women’s PGA Championship (2022).
One painful moment came during the 2021 US Women’s Open when she led by five strokes heading into back nine but ended up missing out on playoff by one shot due to poor performance on final holes.
