Lexi Thompson Leads PGA Championship

Lexi Thompson, despite announcing her retirement, is playing some of her best golf ever.

She shot a 68 in the first round of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, putting her at four-under and leading by one shot over Nelly Korda and Patty Tavatanakit. This is her best performance in a Major in two years.

Thompson, who recently said she would retire after this season, also finished second last week. Even though she’s leading at Sahalee Country Club, she feels good about retiring no matter what happens this week. “I figured I would be getting that question,” Thompson said when asked if winning could change her mind .

“I’m just taking it one day at a time,” she added. “Golf is unpredictable, so I’m not looking too far ahead.”

Thompson’s Comfort on the Course

Thompson doesn’t think her recent form has anything to do with knowing it’s her final season. She believes it’s more about feeling comfortable and enjoying each moment on the course.

“I don’t think my announcement has affected my play,” she explained. “It’s just about being relaxed out there and swinging freely.”

Fans might wonder if this relaxed attitude is why she’s playing so well lately.

A big reason for Thompson’s success could be Mark Wallington, her new caddie from England who previously worked with Charley Hull, Mel Reid, and Emily Pedersen.

“Mark has been a huge help,” Thompson praised him warmly. “He’s always positive—even after bad shots or bogeys—he keeps me focused and confident.”

They’ve known each other for a long time but never worked together until now. Their friendship makes their partnership strong on the course.

“He picks me up when I’m down,” she continued. “We have fun out there; he keeps me smiling.”

Their bond remains solid whether they work together or not: “We’ll always have our friendship no matter what happens.”

What do you think? Will Lexi win another Major before retiring?
