You won’t believe how little it costs to play at one of Africa’s most prestigious golf courses. Muthaiga Golf Club in Nairobi, Kenya – host of this week’s Magical Kenya Open – lets juniors play for less than a dollar.
That’s right – just 93 cents gets young golfers onto the same fairways where golf legends like Seve Ballesteros and Trevor Immelman once played.
Even for adults, the prices are surprisingly reasonable. A weekend round without a member costs about $77 (£61), and if you know a member, that drops to around $47.
Weekday golf is even cheaper. You’ll pay $54 without a member, or about $33 if you’re playing with one. Want to squeeze in a quick nine holes? That’ll be $32.50, or just $19.40 with a member.
This isn’t just any golf course, either. Muthaiga has been around since the 1920s and has hosted the Kenya Open 43 times. Some of golf’s biggest names have walked these fairways.
Between 2001 and 2004, famous South African architect Peter Matkovich redesigned the course. Today, it stretches to 7,200 yards for the pros and is known for having “the fastest greens in East Africa.”
But the real magic happens beyond the fairways. While you’re playing, you might spot monkeys swinging through the Karura Forest or catch glimpses of exotic birds. There are even lakes full of different kinds of fish.
Think about it – where else can you play a championship-level course, possibly see wildlife, and experience a slice of golf history for less than $80?
It’s probably the cheapest green fee you’ll find on any major professional tour this year. Even the most affordable PGA Tour venues usually cost way more, especially after adding taxes and fees.
Sure, Kenya might be a long trip for most golfers. But for the price of a typical round at your local course, you could be playing where the pros play – with a few monkeys watching from the trees.
