Jordan Spieth Suggests Changes To Tour Championship Format

Big changes could be coming to golf’s season finale, according to Jordan Spieth.

The Tour Championship’s current format, where players start with different scores based on their season rankings, might be getting a makeover. It’s been a hot topic ever since it was introduced in 2024, when Scottie Scheffler started with a two-shot head start as the points leader.

“It’s silly,” Scheffler said bluntly about the system, arguing it doesn’t really show who played best all year.

Spieth dropped some hints about possible changes after attending his final PGA Tour policy board meeting. He’s stepping down from his role as player director, handing the reins to Camilo Villegas.

“Everything’s pretty much on the table,” Spieth said. “We might see head-to-head matches, or maybe fewer players competing on Sunday. The Tour, TV networks, and fans all think there could be a better way to do this.”

One wild idea that’s getting attention? Moving the tournament to Wednesday through Saturday, then having the top eight players duke it out on Sunday for the FedEx Cup.

Not everyone’s sold on changing things up. Adam Scott, who helps make these decisions, isn’t jumping on board just yet. “You’d have to kind of sell me on that,” he told Golfweek.

The current format came about in 2019 to make things more exciting for TV viewers. Before that, they sometimes ended up with two different winners on the same green – talk about confusing!

Meanwhile, Spieth’s focusing on his own game after coming back from wrist surgery. He’s had a mixed bag of results: a decent showing at Pebble Beach, an impressive fourth place at Phoenix, but then missed the cut at Genesis.

Now he’s got his sights set on the Masters in April.

“I want to play the toughest courses I can find,” Spieth said. “It’s all about getting ready for Augusta.”
