Jordan Spieth just dropped a bombshell about the Masters: he thinks it’s actually the easiest major to win in men’s professional golf.
That’s quite a take from someone who knows what he’s talking about. Spieth won the Green Jacket in 2015 and has come agonizingly close several other times at Augusta National.
“If you look at the field, it’s technically the easiest Major to win,” Spieth told Golf.com.
Why? It’s pretty simple, according to the three-time major champion. The Masters has a smaller field of players and everyone knows the course like the back of their hand.
This might sound crazy to most golf fans. After all, the Masters is probably the most prestigious tournament in golf, with all those traditions and that famous green jacket.
But Spieth thinks we’ve all gotten a bit carried away with the Masters mystique.
“Augusta’s just blown up more than it probably should be,” he said. He’s particularly talking about the pressure on Rory McIlroy, who’s still chasing that elusive Masters win to complete his career Grand Slam.
Here’s what’s really interesting: Spieth has managed to play well at Augusta even when his game wasn’t great elsewhere.
“I’ve contended there when I’ve had next to nothing, and there’s no real reason for that,” he admitted.
The course is actually pretty forgiving off the tee, which helps players who might be struggling with their driving. That’s different from most other majors, where accuracy is absolutely crucial.
It’s given Spieth a huge confidence boost. “Well, I don’t really care how I’m playing,” he said about heading to Augusta. “It doesn’t matter. That’s a nice place to be.”
The Masters might get the most attention and have the biggest TV audience, but Spieth thinks we need to keep things in perspective.
“Everything – no matter what the story is – gets a little blown out of proportion,” he said.
With this year’s Masters just around the corner, Spieth’s “hot take” might raise some eyebrows. But it’s hard to argue with someone who’s slipped on that Green Jacket himself.
