Joost Luiten’s path to the Paris Olympics just got a bit brighter.
The International Golf Federation (IGF) announced that Luiten, a six-time DP World Tour winner, is now on the reallocation list for the 60-man tournament at Le Golf National. This means he could still compete if any of the 21 players ahead of him withdraw before August 1.
Luiten was initially told by NOC*NSF that he had no chance of finishing in the top eight at the Olympics and wouldn’t be part of the Dutch team. He took them to court and won, but his spot had already been given away .
IGF’s Statement:
The IGF admitted they made an error with Luiten’s qualification process. They tried to get an extra spot for him but were denied by the IOC. Fans might think this whole situation is very unfair.
Luiten expressed his frustration on Instagram, saying: “I can’t take The Olympics (IOC) serious anymore! If they say the fundamentals of the Olympic Games are about INTEGRITY, FAIRPLAY and RESPECT you are all lies!”
Despite qualifying by their rules, his spot was given away because NOC*NSF withdrew him early. Now he’s left without a place in Paris.
In other news, Luiten missed the cut at this week’s Scottish Open but will play in his 10th Open Championship next week at Royal Troon.
