The Open de Espana got a major boost when Jon Rahm confirmed he will play after his wife gave birth to their third child.
Rahm had skipped the Wednesday Pro-Am, raising doubts about his participation in the tournament he’s won three times. But Spanish outlet Marca reported that the 29-year-old will indeed compete on Thursday.
This is great news for both Rahm and the tournament. Last week, he had to pull out of the LIV Golf Team Championship due to flu-like symptoms, just a week after winning $18 million at another LIV event.
Rahm aims for a historic fourth Open de Espana title, which would surpass Seve Ballesteros’ record. This tournament is also one of four DP World Tour events he needs to play to qualify for the Ryder Cup.
Ryder Cup Qualification:
With Rahm joining LIV Golf at the end of 2023, there’s been much speculation about his efforts to qualify for this prestigious team event. To be eligible, he must play in four DP World Tour tournaments. After competing in the Olympics, Rahm appealed his DP World Tour sanctions, allowing him to participate in the Open de Espana.
Fans might wonder if Rahm’s busy schedule will affect his performance.
Aiming also to compete at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and Andalucia Masters, Rahm faces a hectic four weeks ahead. He’s currently favored by bookmakers over Tommy Fleetwood and fellow LIV golfer Tyrrell Hatton for this event at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid.
Joining him are other LIV golfers like Patrick Reed and Spaniards David Puig and Eugenio Chacarra.
What do you think about Rahm’s chances?
