Joaquin Niemann is optimistic that LIV Golf will secure its own path into the four men’s Majors by next year.
Right now, LIV Golf players can’t qualify for the Majors easily. Even Talor Gooch, who won in 2023, only played in one Major this year thanks to a special invite to the PGA Championship.
Niemann managed to play in three Majors. He got invites for The Masters and PGA Championship and qualified for The Open by winning the 2023 Australian Open. However, he missed out on the US Open.
“I think it’s going to happen,” Niemann said about LIV getting Major spots. “They should include us because we have top players here.”
Pathways and Frustrations:
Niemann believes there are other ways he can qualify but thinks it would be better if LIV had direct spots. “There are at least ten guys here who could win Majors,” he added.
Niemann tops the LIV Golf standings with two wins this season . He feels frustrated but remains hopeful that things will improve for LIV Golf.
Fans might think it’s unfair that top players from LIV don’t get automatic spots in Majors.
From his side, Niemann is confident he’ll find a way into the Majors even if it means taking different routes like playing on other tours or earning special invites again next year.
He plans to compete on the DP World Tour at season’s end to gather ranking points and earn his spot in future Majors. Winning events like the Australian Open also helps him qualify directly for tournaments like The Masters if he’s among the top 50 in world rankings by year’s end.
After winning the Australian Open and finishing second at Dubai Desert Classic, he’s ranked high in Race to Dubai standings too.
“If I can go play DP World events, I’ll try because of my high ranking,” he said. “But ideally, I’d prefer just staying with LIV.”
Before all that though, Niemann has upcoming tournaments at JCB Golf & Country Club and Le Golf National where he’ll compete in men’s Olympic golf tournament next week.
“The Olympics are special; having a gold medal would be amazing,” he shared excitedly about playing every four years despite it being his fourth consecutive week of competition already this season!
What do you think? Should more spots be given directly to top players from different leagues?
