Big Money and Big Names Hit India’s First International Series Golf Event
The Asian Tour is bringing serious star power to India this week, with Bryson DeChambeau and Joaquin Niemann headlining a $2 million tournament at DLF Golf and Country Club.
It’s a huge step up from the tour’s season opener in the Philippines, where players competed for just $500,000. The winner in India will take home a cool $360,000 – not bad for four days’ work.
But there’s more than just money on the line. This tournament could be a golden ticket to the LIV Golf League for the winner (if they’re not already on the circuit).
Several LIV Golf stars are teeing it up, including:
- Harold Varner III
- Sebastian Munoz
- Paul Casey
- Abraham Ancer
- Carlos Ortiz
The home crowd will be watching Anirban Lahiri, India’s only LIV Golf player and a member of DeChambeau’s Crushers GC team. Local favorites Shubhankar Sharma and Gaganjeet Bhullar, both DP World Tour winners, are also in the mix.
This is the first of 10 special events on the Asian Tour backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF). While the prize money is impressive, it’s still smaller than this week’s DP World Tour event in Bahrain ($2.5 million) and just a fraction of the PGA Tour’s Pebble Beach tournament ($20 million).
Prize Money Breakdown
The winner gets $360,000
Second place takes home $220,000
Third place earns $126,000
[Full prize money table follows with positions 1-75]
The tournament’s being played at DLF Golf and Country Club in Gurgaon, rated as India’s best course multiple times. It’s previously hosted the Hero Indian Open on the DP World Tour.
Could this be the start of something big for golf in India? With this kind of prize money and these star players, it’s definitely worth watching.
