Improving Golf by Listening to Brands Like Malbon

Golf needs to pay more attention to brands like Malbon if it really wants to ‘grow the game.’

The sport is getting more popular because people see the fun and health benefits of playing, but there’s still a problem with getting new people interested.

Even though some old ideas about who plays golf are changing, rules about what you can wear on the course are still a big issue.

Fashion on the Fairway:

Malbon is shaking things up, especially after Jason Day got criticized for his outfit at The Masters in 2024. He was even asked to take off his vest during the second day. Many were surprised by Malbon’s bold designs at first, but later realized that maybe they weren’t such a big deal after all.

Stephen Malbon, who started the brand with his wife Erica, believes clothes don’t affect how well someone plays. He says, “If you’re comfy in your clothes, go play! You might inspire others…” Fans might think it’s cool when players dress differently.

In an interview, Malbon shared that you don’t need to dress like a pro unless you are one. Sure, there are some rules like wearing a polo and tucking in your shirt. But beyond that? Wear what makes you happy!

Golf isn’t like cycling where special gear is needed for performance. If you’re just playing nine holes casually, why not wear something relaxed?

Malbon thinks strict dress codes can turn away potential golfers who fear being judged for their attire.

During The Masters—a huge event watched by many non-golfers—Day’s outfit became a talking point. Some viewers might have thought golf wasn’t welcoming because of this fuss over clothing.

Malbon said: “Jason doesn’t care about comments on his pants. I don’t either.” Yet he worries that mocking Day sends a bad message to those watching from home.

He feels golf missed a chance to show it’s open to everyone by criticizing someone comfortable in their own style.

But change is happening slowly, and maybe soon everyone will feel welcome on the green no matter what they’re wearing. What do you think—should golf be more flexible with fashion?
