England’s Harry Hall won his first PGA Tour title on Sunday by chipping in for birdie during a playoff.
The 26-year-old from Cornwall celebrated the victory with his wife, Jordan, who is expecting their first child next week.
“It’s been a while, but hopefully this gets me into some of the Signature Events back in the UK that I can go and play in front of a home crowd,” Hall said after winning the five-man playoff. He added, “The due date is Friday. She’s scheduled to induce on Tuesday because I needed to play more.”
Hall tied with Pierceson Coody, Matt NeSmith, Zac Blair, and Rico Hoey at 22 under par at Keene Trace Golf Club in Kentucky. Despite reaching 23-under along with Hoey, no one could surpass Blair and NeSmith’s earlier score.
Blair thought someone would beat his score and left the course but returned after realizing he might still have a chance. However, he was eliminated at the first playoff hole along with Hoey.
Playoff Drama
With three players left in contention, nerves were high as none managed to find the green at the par-3 9th hole. Fans might think this tension made it even more exciting to watch! Then came Hall’s magical moment from the rough behind the green .
“Before I chipped that, I was thinking Phil Rowe would love for me to win a PGA Tour event by chipping it in,” Hall shared afterward. “He was my coach in college. Just walking up to that chip I was thinking about him.”
Hall earned $720,000 (£555,000) and 300 FedEx Cup points from this victory. Now he’s focused on his dream of winning a Green Jacket: “That’s always been my goal growing up and this is just one step closer to that.”
Coming from such a small place back home makes being a PGA Tour winner really cool for him. He also mentioned how sessions with Butch Harmon helped improve his swing: “I’ve always thought if I could get to the next level I’d probably have to hit it better.”
“Butch had some time for me about six weeks ago; it was our first meeting ever,” he continued. “My iron play has been fantastic since then.”
