PGA Tour winner Hunter Mahan has announced his retirement from the professional circuit to pursue a coaching career at a high school in Texas. The 41-year-old golfer, who turned professional in 2003 and notched six victories on the PGA Tour between 2007 and 2014, has reached a career-high of World No.4 in 2012. Although Mahan has experienced a run of less successful years since his peak, he expressed his excitement for his new coaching career in an interview with Golfweek’s Adam Schupak.

Mahan will be coaching the boys’ golf team at Liberty Christian in Argyle, Texas, and he explained his decision to transition into coaching in his interview with Schupak. He stated, “I asked randomly about the head coaching golf position because I thought it could be fun and interesting and something completely out of my comfort zone but something I have a lot of knowledge in, and the coach was retiring so I threw my name in the hat.” The decision to pursue coaching came after careful consideration, as Mahan and his wife plan to move from Dallas so their children can attend school in the new city.

Despite his retirement from the PGA Tour, Mahan’s professional achievements include four winning appearances for Team USA at the Presidents Cup and three Ryder Cup outings. He also had eight top-10 finishes in Majors, with at least one in each of them. However, with his family in mind, Mahan has chosen not to pursue a commentary career and expressed his focus on spending time with his family.

Mahan is excited to begin this new chapter in his life and is looking forward to coaching the boys’ golf team at Liberty Christian in the upcoming spring season. His decision to retire from professional golf and start a coaching career reflects his dedication to his family and his passion for teaching the next generation of golfers.
