Dewi Weber Eyes First LPGA Tour Title After Olympics Snub

Dewi Weber and two other Dutch golfers were stopped from competing in Paris 2024 by the Netherlands Olympic Committee.

The committee believed they had no chance of finishing in the top eight, which led to Darius van Driel and Joost Luiten also being excluded.

Weber expressed her disappointment to Golf Digest, saying it hurt to be deemed unworthy of representing her country. “Our own country is saying we don’t think you’re worthy of being an Olympian, and you’re not worthy of representing the Netherlands. And that, honestly, that hurts,” she said.

Weber’s Current Success:

Despite this setback, Weber is now close to winning her first LPGA Tour title at the Portland Classic. She’s only one stroke behind Andrea Lee from the USA after a solid round on Saturday. Fans might feel this proves the committee wrong.

In Friday’s round, Weber shot an amazing 62 , surprising many since her only other LPGA Tour event this year ended with a T52 finish at ShopRite LPGA Classic. Now she aims to become the first Dutch woman to win an LPGA Tour title, challenging Anne Van Dam who did make it to Paris.

Weber shared her thoughts on this goal: “That’s been the goal, to be the first and I’m like in this race with Anne, of course.” She added that thinking about results isn’t helpful during play: “You can’t be thinking about any of the results honestly when you’re out here playing. You just got to play golf and see where you land at the end of it.”

Graduating from University of Miami and turning pro in 2019, Weber still seeks her first professional win but believes it can happen even among tough competition. “I mean, that’s why I’m here. That’s why I’m here. Like we play to win,” she stated confidently.

She emphasized that every event is an opportunity: “I’m not expecting to win but like I try the best I can do.” Fans will surely keep an eye on whether she achieves this milestone soon.

What do you think? Will Dewi Weber prove everyone wrong?
